The importance of instilling the concept of...
The holidays are just around the corner, and what better way to begin the season than with the Elf on the Shelf? Not only does the Elf on the Shelf remind children that Santa’s watching, but it also provides fun ways for you to get creative and for your children to use their imaginations. In the next two months, we’ve provided a myriad of ways you can incorporate this little mischievous elf in to your preschool and kindergarten classroom. Will your children find him/her in the math center counting or sorting bows? Or will they find him/her in the game center practicing his/her ABCs or rhyming words on boxes and bows? Wherever they find him or her, your children with be delighted and surprised with the Elf on the Shelf preschool and kindergarten activities, lessons, printables, games, and crafts.

We like the concept of the scout elf visiting the classroom and reporting back to Santa about all the fun activities the children did during the day. We also wanted to include our elf in some of our learning centers. Each day the children will discover the scout elf introducing a new center which he/she has prepared the previous night. We feel that not touching the elf is a rule we would like to bend. Our scout elf doesn't lose his/her powers if he/she gets touched as long as we're being gentle with him/her.

Let children describe the shape of the letter Ee and discuss the sound the letter /e/ makes in the word "elf." Exaggerate the initial sound and say /e/ elf. Let children repeat with you the word and the sound. Write the word "elf" on the board and underline the letter e. Read the KidsSoup emergent reader book Where is Ely the Elf? After the book has been read, ask children if they remember any other words that begin with the same sound as the word "elf." Write the words on the board (egg, eggplant, elephant, envelope, etc.).
