Seasonal trees, such as pine and pear with partridge, set the stage for this week of the Holidays and the Five Senses theme. Children are introduced to the long and short i sounds. They also practice spelling CVC words, identify the letters in their names, count, add, and order numbers. This week's literacy activity is based on the book A Wish to Be a Christmas Tree.

Week 2: Holidays and the Five Senses Theme: Baking

The holidays and your five senses theme continues this week with a focus on baking. Baking is a fundamental part of holiday celebrations and lends itself to all sorts of sensory experiences. Plus, who doesn’t love to learn surrounded by cookies, pies, pancakes, and gingerbread?

Week 1: Holidays and the Five Senses Theme: Senses

Set the holiday mood with a lively reading of the classic poem “Twas the Night Before Christmas” by Clement Clarke Moore. The corresponding literacy activity provides children practice using textual clues to determine the meanings of the poem’s more difficult vocabulary words. In addition, materials are provided for a week devoted entirely to an introduction or review of the five senses.

As a lead up to Thanksgiving, Week 3 of the On The Table theme presents a bounty of activities, games, and crafts that focus on the fall harvest and foods that are often served on feast day. This week's book, The Beastly Feast by Bruce Goldstone, is full of rhyming fun and bright colorful characters.
