Hanukkah, also called Chanukuh, is the eight-day Jewish commemoration of the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem during the second century B.C., where according to Jewish legend, the Jews had risen up against their oppressors.
Kwanzaa, a seven day festival created by Dr. Maulana Karenga in 1966 to bring African-Americans together to celebrate their African heritage, takes place from December 26 to January 1. Although Kwanzaa is celebrated throughout the world, it is mostly an American holiday. The words "matunda ya kwanzaa" mean "first fruits" in the Swahili language.

‘Tis the season to be jolly, so this week’s focus is on one of the season’s jolliest characters: Jolly Old St. Nick, also known as Santa Claus. The week’s literacy lesson connects to How the Grinch Stole Christmas! by Dr. Seuss, the classic children’s favorite about an anti-Santa Claus who grows a heart.
Seasonal trees, such as pine and pear with partridge, set the stage for this week of the Holidays and the Five Senses theme. Children are introduced to the long and short i sounds. They also practice spelling CVC words, identify the letters in their names, count, add, and order numbers. This week's literacy activity is based on the book A Wish to Be a Christmas Tree.
The holidays and your five senses theme continues this week with a focus on baking. Baking is a fundamental part of holiday celebrations and lends itself to all sorts of sensory experiences. Plus, who doesn’t love to learn surrounded by cookies, pies, pancakes, and gingerbread?
Set the holiday mood with a lively reading of the classic poem “Twas the Night Before Christmas” by Clement Clarke Moore. The corresponding literacy activity provides children practice using textual clues to determine the meanings of the poem’s more difficult vocabulary words. In addition, materials are provided for a week devoted entirely to an introduction or review of the five senses.
This month’s theme explores the holidays via the five senses with special emphasis on baking, seasonal trees, and Christmas traditions. Literacy activities to build comprehension skills and develop print concepts are provided for Twas was the Night Before Christmas, The Sweet Smell of Christmas, A Wish to Be a Christmas Tree, and Dr.
