Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss! Hat Craft and Activities

Celebrate the birthday of beloved Children's author Dr. Seuss on March 2nd by making Dr. Seuss-inspired birthday hats from brown paper bags. Children can reflect on their favorite Dr. Seuss books, and choose from a few of the Dr. Seuss-related resources from the KidsSoup member site to round out the day.

Dr. Seuss Birthday Cake Hats

What you need:

Large Brown Paper Grocery Bags
Yellow and Orange Construction Paper
Decorative Items: Puff balls, streamers, colored tape, feathers, ribbon etc.
Glue
Scissors

What you do:

Preschool Activities:

Prepare one brown paper bag hat for each child by rolling up the ends. Reserve the bag handles to cut into strips for making the candles for the tops of the hats.

Preschool Activities:

Explain that children will make birthday cake hats to wear in celebration of Dr. Seuss's birthday. Introduce the paper bag hats and have children paint them with brightly colored stripes to look like cake layers. While the paint dries, have children make candles using strips from the paper bag handles and flames cut from orange or yellow construction paper.

Preschool Activities:

Review the illustrations in several Dr. Seuss books and lead a short discussion about his artistic style: bright colors, curved shapes, stripes, polka-dots etc. Then, let children decorate their hats with streamers, puff balls, and other appropriate materials from a Dr. Seuss-inspired perspective. Once glue is dry, the bags can be fitted to children's heads.

Preschool Activities:

Have each child try on his or her hat and gather the paper at the bottom in the back of the hat until the child says the fit is right. Remove the hat and staple the gathered paper together.

Preschool Activities:

Cut small slits on top of each child's hat where the paper candles can be inserted. Fold the inside tips of the candles back on the insides of the hats and glue them in place. When the glue is completely dry, have children wear their Birthday Cake Hats as they sing "Happy Birthday" to Dr. Seuss!

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss Class Book

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss Class Book (for KidsSoup members only)

Lead a brief discussion about Dr. Seuss and the books he's authored. Ask children to name their favorites and list the titles on chart paper. Display a book page and read the incomplete sentence at the bottom: My favorite book is ______________. Explain to children that they will each complete a page for a class book to mark Dr. Seuss's birthday on March 2 by writing the title of his/her favorite Dr. Seuss book in the blank space and decorating the cake with drawings of objects and characters from the book.

Refuel with a Dr. Seuss-inspired snack!
